DTF transfer instructions — how to press it properly
These DTF transfer instructions are for the transfers we print. Follow them and the print will bond firmly and last through dozens of washes. In short: about 155°C, a 5-second pre-press of the garment, 8 seconds with the transfer, and peel the film straight away while it’s still warm.
- About 155°C
- 5 s pre-press, 8 s with the transfer
- Peel straight away, while warm
- A home iron works too, without steam
Pressing with a heat press
Pre-press
Heat the press to about 155°C and press the empty garment for 5 seconds. This removes moisture and creases.
Press the transfer
Place the transfer print side down on the garment and press for 8 seconds with firm, even pressure.
Hot peel
Peel the film straight away, while it’s still warm, in one smooth motion. Optionally press another 8 seconds for extra durability.
DTF transfer instructions: temperature and time
| Step | Setting |
|---|---|
| Press temperature | about 155°C |
| Pre-press the garment | 5 seconds |
| Press with the transfer | 8 seconds, firm and even pressure |
| Peel the film | straight away, while warm |
| Second press (optional) | 8 seconds, for extra durability |
For the second press, it’s a good idea to put a sheet of baking paper or teflon sheet over the print so it doesn’t stick to the platen.
Applying a DTF transfer with a home iron
A heat press gives the most durable result, but a transfer can also be applied with an iron:
- no steam: empty the water tank;
- at a high temperature (cotton setting);
- on a hard, flat surface, not on an ironing board, which gives;
- with firm, even pressure, pressing in place without sliding the iron;
- cover the whole area of the transfer, especially the edges and thin elements.
Peel the film straight away while it’s still warm, as with a press. If any part lifts, put the film back and press a little longer.
Common mistakes
- Pressing too briefly or too lightly: the print comes off in the first wash.
- A steam iron: moisture stops the adhesive from bonding.
- A dirty or damp garment: fabric softener and moisture reduce adhesion. That’s what the pre-press is for.
- A mirrored file: with DTF, send the design as it should look, without mirroring it.
Caring for the garment after pressing
Wash the garment inside out, at a low temperature and without bleach, and don’t iron directly on the print. That way the transfer stays stretchy and doesn’t crack.

What temperature do you press a DTF transfer at?
About 155°C: a 5-second pre-press of the garment and 8 seconds with the transfer.
Hot or cold peel?
Our transfers are peeled hot, straight after pressing.
Can I use an iron?
Yes, without steam, at a high temperature, with firm pressure on a hard surface.
Why did the print come off after washing?
Most often because of too little temperature, time or pressure. Press again with baking paper on top.
What fabrics does it work on?
Cotton, polyester and blends, light and dark.
